Dr. Robert Chen
Cataract And Refractive Surgeon - Comprehensive Ophthalmologist
Using the most up-to-date knowledge in providing compassionate and excellent patient care has been a core commitment throughout Dr. Robert Chen’s training. Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Robert Chen, MD, completed his undergraduate education at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, graduating both cum laude with High Distinction and Phi Beta Kappa. While studying engineering during his undergraduate years, Dr. Chen became interested in the emerging field of cataract and refractive surgery in Ophthalmology. This interest, coupled with a life-long desire of becoming a physician, led him to attend medical school at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He graduated in 1994 with a MD degree and received the Edith/Denton McKane Outstanding Ophthalmology Research Award during his medical school training. After completing his medical internship at Northwestern University, Dr. Chen fulfilled his ophthalmology residency training at Columbia-Presbyterian Edward Harkness Eye Institute. During his residency, Dr. Chen had the opportunity of learning from the best clinical and academic professors in providing comprehensive eye care using the latest clinical skills. In addition, he was able to apply his training overseas in India, providing volunteer ophthalmic care and surgery. He completed his ophthalmology residency training as Chief Resident in 1998.
With the desire of pursuing both academic excellence and clinical care, Dr. Chen continued a sub-specialized LASIK / PRK fellowship training at the world-renowned Gimbel Eye Centre in Canada. The Centre, internationally known for its innovative and advanced research in all aspects of refractive surgeon practices at the time, allowed Dr. Chen to collaborate and to learn from several of the most respected ophthalmologists around the world. As a result, Dr. Chen published a number of articles ranging from the safety of refractive surgery to the predictability of refractive surgery outcomes by the completion of his fellowship studies in 1999.
Since then, the goal of promoting outstanding, advanced eye care has been Dr. Chen’s focus at the Rockland Eye Physicians and Surgeons. While becoming a full partner at his practice, Dr. Chen has performed thousands of cataract and refractive surgical procedures to date. In addition to becoming Board-Certified in Ophthalmology, he has remained active as a Fellow Member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and as a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. Given an academic appointment as Lecturer at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons between 2001 and 2014, Dr. Chen has had the privilege of teaching other physicians, residents, optometrists, and medical students on various topics in ophthalmology.
Aside from his professional responsibilities, Dr. Chen appreciates spending time traveling with his family. He enjoys a number of outdoor activities including camping, scuba diving, and skiing. On occasion, he has served as an adult leader for his local Boy Scout troop as a merit badge counselor and assistant scoutmaster.
