For many patients, eyeglasses are uncomfortable and can be inconvenient. Glasses can easily be lost or broken, and many eyeglass lenses do not protect your eyes from ultra violet rays. We offer the highest quality contact lenses at Rockland Eye Physicians & Surgeons in West Nyack and Garnerville, NY, provided by our advanced contact lens specialists. Contact lenses provide vision improvement every day for of millions of Americans and can protect your eyes from harmful rays from the sun.
How Do Contact Lenses Correct Vision?
Contact lenses work to correct your vision in the same way as eyeglasses. These specialized lenses change the direction of light rays entering the eye so that the light focuses on the retina correctly. The primary difference between the contacts and eyeglasses is that contact lenses sit directly on the eye. Contacts “float” on the tear film that covers the cornea without damaging the eye.
Are Contact Lenses Right for You?
Previously, contact lenses only worked for a small set of patients. Now, patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, and even astigmatism can wear contacts. There are even options available for patients with conditions such as chronic dry eye. At Rockland Eye Physicians & Surgeons, we can evaluate your eye health and find the perfect lens to meet your needs. Our specialists can handle even the most complex cases and are regularly sought out by patients from all over the county.
The Contact Lens Examination
Contact lens exams are usually performed in conjunction with a routine eye exam. We will evaluate your eye health and test your vision to determine the degree of refractive errors. After examining your eyes, we will review your contact lens options with you. Our specialists can help you select the option that is right for your unique eye anatomy and vision needs.
Once you have selected an option, we will begin measuring your eyes. We use a special instrument known as a keratometer to measure the curvature of your cornea. When necessary, such as for individuals with irregular corneal surfaces, we can utilize a sophisticated corneal topographer to precisely map your corneal surface.
Many patients wearing glasses complain about discomfort, poor peripheral vision, the need for prescription sunglasses or special lenses, and the dirt and grime they attract.
We may give you trial lenses, especially if you have never worn contacts before. These lenses allow us to evaluate overall fit and help you get accustomed to wearing contacts. Once we find lenses that work for you, we can provide you with a final prescription. Typically, you will need two to three visits to complete this process. More complex cases may take longer.
