Eye Care for Children

We recommend parents bring their child in for their first eye exam around age three. This is when a child is typically able to identify simple pictures on an eye chart. An additional appointment is recommended when the child reaches kindergarten. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye problems in children is critical in order to prevent any disruption to normal visual development.

Aside from the routine exams mentioned above, newborns should be seen upon discharge from the hospital if they were significantly premature. Children should be checked as soon as possible if they are squinting, or if they fail a screening with their pediatrician or school nurse.  Regular exams are important if children have diabetes or juvenile arthritis or if an inheritable eye disease runs in their family.

Eye Conditions in Children

In addition to checking for standard vision problems, there are other conditions we must watch for in children, including:

  • Strabismus, or crossed eyes

  • Blocked tear ducts
  • Amblyopia, or a lazy eye
  • Muscle weakness or issues

In addition, children are also at risk of developing cataracts or glaucoma. Some children are born with these conditions, while other children can develop them at a young age. Early intervention with any of these eye conditions is crucial for ensuring your child has good vision later in life. In cases of strabismus or amblyopia, eye patching therapy or surgical intervention may sometimes be required for treatment.

Our entire staff makes every effort to ensure all our pediatric patients feel comfortable and safe when they come to our office. We also have unique experience treating children with special needs.
